Recently, I had the extraordinary privilege of embarking on an unforgettable Alaska cruise with Princess. This dream trip had been at the very top of my bucket list for what felt like an eternity, and the anticipation of finally experiencing Alaska’s majestic beauty from the comfort of a magnificent ship was almost palpable. Having previously enjoyed a fantastic Panama Canal cruise with Princess, I knew I was in for another exceptional journey filled with incredible sights, exquisite dining, and unparalleled service. The promise of adventure and relaxation was exactly what I needed.

The logistics for our Alaska cruise departing from Vancouver were incredibly smooth, making the start of our vacation stress-free. We flew into Vancouver on the morning of our sailing, which allowed us to transition directly from the airport to the ship without any unnecessary delays. Utilizing the convenient bus transfer from the airport to the cruise terminal, we found ourselves walking right onto the ship, even with our surprisingly early 9 AM arrival. This seamless boarding process immediately set a relaxing tone for the entire trip, a testament to Princess Cruises’ efficiency and dedication to guest comfort.

Once settled into our comfortable stateroom, our first priority was, of course, lunch! I truly appreciate that upon arrival, the Horizon Court buffet and the casual Pizza and Grill areas are immediately open, allowing guests to begin indulging in the cruise experience right away. I had invited my dear friend Rachel to join me on this adventure, and for her, it was her very first cruise. Witnessing her excitement as we began exploring the ship together was infectious. We wandered through the various decks, marveling at the different pools, vibrant bars, enticing shops, and all the diverse areas designed for entertainment and relaxation. Every corner offered something new to discover, and the sheer scale of the ship was impressive.

And what’s a girls’ trip without a celebratory cocktail? It felt like the perfect way to kick off our Alaskan escapade! This particular Long Island Iced Tea held a special significance for me, as it was the preferred drink of Kurt, the husband of my friend Lynne from 365 Days of Baking. Prior to this trip, I believe I had only ever tasted a Long Island Iced Tea once in my life, way back on my 21st birthday. Kurt, however, became its unofficial ambassador for me, and after just one sip, I was completely reintroduced and quickly converted. It instantly became a firm favorite, embodying the spirit of vacation and good company.

So, you might be wondering, what exactly goes into this deceptively simple yet potent cocktail? Let’s dive into the classic Long Island Iced Tea ingredients.

Long Island Iced Tea Ingredients

The beauty of the Long Island Iced Tea lies in its harmonious blend of several common spirits, each contributing a distinct note to the overall profile. The combination creates a complex yet incredibly smooth drink that perfectly masks the alcoholic content, making it dangerously delicious. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Gin: Provides a botanical, juniper-forward base.
  • Tequila: Adds an earthy, slightly peppery kick.
  • Vodka: A neutral spirit that provides alcoholic strength without overwhelming other flavors.
  • Rum: Contributes a hint of sweetness and tropical warmth.
  • Triple Sec: An orange-flavored liqueur that introduces a sweet and citrusy element, balancing the strong spirits.
  • Sweet and Sour Mix: The crucial component for balancing the drink, providing both tartness and sweetness. If you don’t have it on hand, a simple homemade alternative works perfectly.
  • Cola: Used sparingly, primarily for its characteristic color and a final touch of sweetness, mimicking the appearance of iced tea.

This unique blend is what gives the Long Island Iced Tea its distinctive, universally loved taste. Don’t be intimidated by the number of spirits; they work together in synergy to create a truly special drink.

How to Make a Long Island Iced Tea

Crafting a perfect Long Island Iced Tea is surprisingly straightforward, whether you’re mixing a single glass or preparing a pitcher for a party. The key is precise measurement to ensure a balanced flavor profile. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • Gather Your Tools: Ensure you have all your ingredients, a jigger or shot glass for accurate measurements (remember, 1 tablespoon equals approximately 0.5 oz), a shaker (for single servings) or a pitcher (for larger batches), and plenty of ice.
  • Equal Parts Spirits: The traditional recipe calls for “one part” of each primary spirit. For a single serving, use approximately 1 ounce of gin, tequila, vodka, rum, and triple sec. If you’re making a pitcher, scale up accordingly, perhaps using 1/2 cup of each spirit. This ensures the signature strength and flavor complexity.
  • The Sweet and Sour Secret: The sweet and sour mix is vital. If you don’t have a commercial mix, you can easily create your own with 1 ounce of fresh lemon juice and 1/2 ounce of simple syrup per glass. This homemade version often results in a fresher, brighter taste.
  • Mixing It Up: Combine all the spirits and the sweet and sour mix in your shaker or pitcher. For a single serving, shake well with ice until thoroughly chilled. If making a pitcher, stir vigorously to ensure all ingredients are well combined.
  • The Cola Splash: This is where the “iced tea” illusion comes to life. Pour your mixed cocktail into a glass filled with fresh ice. Then, add just a splash of cola – enough to achieve that signature amber color of iced tea. The cola is primarily for aesthetics and a subtle sweetness, not to be a dominant flavor. A little goes a long way.
  • Garnish and Serve: Garnish your Long Island Iced Tea with a fresh lemon wedge or wheel. The citrus brightens the drink and adds a professional touch. Serve immediately and enjoy responsibly!

This cocktail is a testament to how simple techniques can yield extraordinary results. Experiment with the sweet and sour ratio to find your perfect balance!

The bartenders on the ship were absolutely phenomenal. Their warm personalities and expert mixology truly enhanced our experience. They quickly got to know our preferences, often anticipating our drink orders, and always put on a fantastic show while crafting our cocktails. Their passion for their craft was evident in every shaken or stirred creation. At one point, they surprised us with a special “Top Shelf Long Island Iced Tea,” made with premium brands of all the liquors and a delightful splash of Prosecco instead of cola. The result was lighter in color, but oh my, it was an incredibly smooth and sophisticated twist on the classic – a true highlight!

So, if you’re contemplating an Alaska cruise, I wholeheartedly recommend it! There’s simply no chance of boredom when you’re sailing through magnificent places like Glacier Bay National Park, admiring the breathtaking scenery of towering glaciers and pristine wilderness, perhaps with a perfectly mixed Long Island Iced Tea in hand. Beyond the incredible views, the ships offer a plethora of onboard activities: engaging afternoon trivia, lively bingo games, quiet moments in the library, or even thrilling challenges like the onboard escape room, where we might have just set the ship’s record! Every day presented a new opportunity for adventure, relaxation, or laughter, making it an experience I’ll cherish forever. The combination of stunning natural beauty and endless onboard entertainment truly makes a Princess Alaska cruise an unparalleled vacation.
