Irresistible Nutella Crepes

The Ultimate Guide to Making Perfect Nutella Crepes: An Easy Homemade Recipe for Sweet Indulgence

Delight in homemade Nutella Crepes – a simple, thin pancake recipe filled with luscious Nutella and finished with a dusting of powdered sugar. Enhance their flavor further with fresh berries or sliced bananas!

My culinary journey with crepes began unexpectedly during a middle school French class. Our teacher, passionate about French culture, prepared the batter, and we each took turns cooking and attempting to flip these delicate pancakes in a skillet. The real magic happened when we got to fill them – and for me, it was love at first bite with Nutella. That day sparked a lifelong affection for crepes, transforming a simple classroom activity into a cherished memory and a global quest.

Since that memorable day, crepes have become a delightful staple in my life. I’ve sought them out from bustling street food stalls to quaint cafes across countless countries, each encounter reaffirming their universal appeal. From Paris to Prague, New York to Tokyo, one constant remains on nearly every menu: the irresistible Nutella crepe. It’s a testament to the timeless pairing of thin, tender crepes with the rich, hazelnut-chocolate spread that captivates taste buds worldwide.

This recipe simplifies the process, allowing you to whip up a batch of delicious crepes in mere minutes. The batter comes together effortlessly in a blender, streamlining your cooking experience. Once the smooth batter is ready, each crepe is cooked individually on a hot skillet, transforming into a light, airy canvas waiting for your chosen fillings.

Beyond their simplicity, crepes are celebrated as a popular street food worldwide, making them a true culinary chameleon. You’ll find them filled with an astonishing array of ingredients, from sweet fruits and creams to savory meats and cheeses. While the fundamental crepe recipe is wonderfully straightforward, it’s the filling that transforms them into truly decadent Nutella crepes. This guide focuses on that irresistible chocolate-hazelnut spread, but remember, the crepe itself is a versatile base. My husband, for instance, often prefers his filled with a vibrant berry sauce, showcasing the myriad of options available. The beauty of homemade crepes lies in their customizability, ensuring everyone at your table can enjoy their perfect version.

Essential Ingredients for Perfect Crepe Batter

Crafting light and airy crepes starts with a handful of common pantry staples. The magic lies in the ratios and the method, not in exotic ingredients. Using fresh, quality ingredients will always yield the best results for a truly delectable crepe. Here’s what you’ll need for a batch of these delightful treats:

  • All-Purpose Flour
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Whole Milk
  • Melted Butter
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Large Eggs

The secret to perfectly smooth and lump-free crepe batter lies in using a blender. This method not only brings the ingredients together in mere minutes but also achieves that ideal thin consistency crucial for delicate crepes. The final batter should be thin enough to spread easily but not watery, resembling the texture of heavy cream. This consistency ensures your crepes are wonderfully light and pliable.

  1. Begin by adding your wet ingredients: milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, and eggs, to your blender. Process these until they are completely smooth and well combined. This ensures an even distribution of flavors and fats.
  2. In a separate medium-sized bowl, whisk together all the dry ingredients: all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Make sure these are thoroughly mixed to prevent pockets of unblended ingredients in your final batter.
  3. Gradually add the whisked dry ingredients to the blender with the wet mixture. It’s best to add them in batches to avoid overwhelming the blender and to ensure a smooth blend. Continue to process until the batter is completely smooth, with no visible lumps, and reaches the desired consistency of heavy cream.

Once your batter is perfectly blended, it’s ready for cooking. While the cooking process requires a little patience, as each crepe is typically cooked one at a time, the results are well worth the effort. If you have multiple skillets, you can speed things up by cooking several crepes simultaneously.

Cooking Your Delicious Crepes to Golden Perfection

Cooking crepes requires a bit of technique, but with a few simple steps, you’ll be creating beautifully browned, tender crepes in no time. The key is consistent heat and a light touch. Follow these instructions for perfect results:

  1. Prepare your skillet: Heat a 10-inch non-stick skillet over medium heat. It’s crucial for the pan to be adequately hot before you add the batter; this ensures even cooking and prevents the crepes from sticking. A good test is to flick a drop of water onto the pan – if it sizzles and evaporates quickly, it’s ready.
  2. Grease the pan: Lightly brush the hot pan with a small amount of butter. You only need a thin layer to prevent sticking and add a hint of flavor. Too much butter can make the crepe greasy.
  3. Add the batter: Scoop just shy of 1/4 cup of batter into the center of the hot, buttered pan. Immediately lift the pan and gently swirl the batter to quickly and evenly coat the entire bottom surface. The batter should spread very thinly – this is exactly what you want for delicate crepes.
  4. First side cook: Let the crepe cook undisturbed for approximately 2 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready to flip when the edges start to look dry and slightly crispy, and the surface appears set.
  5. Flip and finish: Gently run a thin spatula around the edge of the crepe to loosen it from the pan. Carefully slide the spatula underneath and flip the crepe. Cook the second side for about 1 more minute, or until it achieves a light golden-brown color.
  6. Repeat: Remove the cooked crepe from the pan and place it on a plate. Continue this process with the remaining batter, stacking the finished crepes as you go. You may need to lightly re-butter the pan between each crepe.

Make-Ahead Tips for Convenient Crepes

One of the fantastic aspects of crepes is how well they can be prepared in advance, making them an excellent option for busy mornings or planned entertaining. You have flexibility with both the batter and the cooked crepes:

The **batter is truly ideal for making ahead**. You can prepare it the day before, cover it tightly, and store it in the refrigerator. This allows the flour to fully hydrate, often resulting in an even more tender and pliable crepe. When you’re ready to cook, simply give the batter a quick whisk to ensure it’s well mixed, and proceed as usual for fresh, warm crepes for breakfast or dessert the next day.

You can also **cook the crepes a few hours before** you plan to serve them. Once cooked, stack them on a plate, separating each with a piece of parchment paper to prevent sticking. Cover the stack tightly with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel to keep them from drying out. While crepes are undeniably best when enjoyed fresh off the skillet, they maintain their texture and flavor quite well for up to a day when stored properly. To gently reheat, you can briefly warm them in a microwave, a lightly buttered pan, or a low oven.

Creative Filling Ideas for Your Crepes

After your delicate crepes are cooked to perfection, the real fun begins: filling them! While I confess my absolute favorite is undoubtedly Nutella, the possibilities are truly endless, transforming a simple crepe into a gourmet delight. Think of the crepe as your culinary canvas, ready for a burst of flavor and texture. Here are some fantastic options to inspire your next crepe creation, going beyond just plain Nutella:

  • Fresh Berries: Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or a mix offer a burst of freshness and a beautiful color contrast.
  • Sliced Bananas: A classic pairing with Nutella, or delicious on their own with a drizzle of honey.
  • Jam or Jelly: Any fruit jam, from apricot to strawberry, adds a sweet and tangy element.
  • Lemon Curd: A zesty, creamy filling that provides a delightful citrusy zing.
  • Peanut Butter: For a protein-packed and satisfying treat, especially good with banana slices.
  • Sweetened Cream Cheese: A creamy, slightly tangy filling, often enhanced with a hint of vanilla or lemon zest.
  • Ice Cream: A luxurious dessert option, particularly delicious with warm crepes.
  • Whipped Cream: Light and airy, perfect for adding a touch of elegance to any sweet crepe.
  • Yogurt: A healthier, tangy alternative, especially Greek yogurt, often paired with fruit and a sprinkle of granola.
  • Homemade Nutella: If you’re feeling ambitious, try making your own homemade hazelnut spread for an even fresher flavor.
  • Savory Options (for a different meal!): While this recipe focuses on sweet, crepes are also amazing with ham and cheese, spinach and feta, or even smoked salmon and cream cheese.

With so many delightful possibilities, every member of your family or guest can customize their crepe and discover their new favorite combination!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 whole large eggs
  • 2 Tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Butter for greasing the pan

Filling

  • 1 cup Nutella
  • 1 Tablespoon powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Set these dry ingredients aside.
  • In a blender, combine the wet ingredients: milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Process until the mixture is completely smooth and well incorporated.
  • Gradually add the reserved dry ingredients to the blender, in batches. Blend until the batter is perfectly smooth, with no lumps, and has a thin consistency similar to heavy cream.
  • At this stage, you can cover the batter and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours. This resting period often improves the texture of the crepes.
  • Heat a 10-inch non-stick skillet over medium heat until it is thoroughly hot.
  • Once the pan is hot, lightly brush it with butter. Scoop just under 1/4 cup of batter into the center of the pan.
  • Immediately lift the pan and gently swirl the batter around to evenly coat the entire bottom surface. The crepe should be very thin, which is exactly how it should be.
  • Cook for approximately 2 minutes, until the edges begin to crisp and the surface appears set. Run a thin spatula around the edge to loosen it, then carefully flip the crepe. Cook for an additional 1 minute, or until it is lightly golden brown on the second side.
  • Remove the cooked crepe from the pan and place it on a plate. Continue this process with the remaining batter, lightly re-buttering the pan as needed for each new crepe.
  • To serve, spread a generous amount of Nutella in the center of a warm crepe, then fold or roll it up. For added flavor and texture, you can also include sliced bananas or fresh berries before folding.
  • Serve your delicious Nutella crepes immediately, dusted with a sprinkle of powdered sugar for an elegant finish.
