Spooky Sweet Fun: How to Make Delightful Monster Sandwich Cookies for Halloween Parties
As the crisp autumn air signals the approach of Halloween, our kitchens transform into magical laboratories, bustling with creativity and sweet aromas. This festive season offers the perfect excuse to dive into baking projects that are as fun to make as they are to eat. Today, we’re unleashing our inner mad scientists to create some truly adorable—and a little bit spooky—Monster Sandwich Cookies, guaranteed to be a hit at any Halloween gathering or a delightful treat for trick-or-treaters.

Before we fully immerse ourselves in the ghoulish delights of Halloween baking, I want to take a moment to highlight a truly wonderful cause that I am participating in today. Over at Country Cleaver, my dear friend Megan is generously hosting a bake sale to benefit the Crohns & Colitis Foundation of America. This organization does incredible work supporting individuals affected by these challenging conditions, funding vital research, and providing educational resources. It’s a cause very close to many hearts, and I’m proud to contribute my Peanut Butter Bars to the sale. Every purchase helps make a difference, so please consider stopping by and showing your support!
With Halloween just a few days away, the excitement is palpable! Are you fully prepared for the festivities? Have you planned your costumes, decorated your home, and, most importantly, finalized your spooky menu? This Sunday, for our special #SundaySupper event, Leslie from La Cocina de Leslie is leading a fantastic Trick Or Treat themed celebration. We’ve curated an extensive collection of Halloween-perfect recipes, from bewitching beverages and eerie entrées to decadent desserts and more. Be sure to check back all week long, as I’ll be sharing even more exciting and fun Halloween treats that you won’t want to miss. It’s truly a week-long Halloween party in the making!

Unleash Your Creativity with Monster Sandwich Cookies
These Monster Sandwich Cookies are an absolute dream for any Halloween enthusiast, especially those looking for an easy, customizable, and incredibly fun baking project. The beauty of this recipe lies in its flexibility; you can start with whatever base works best for you. Whether you prefer the convenience of store-bought cookies, the simplicity of frozen cookie dough, or the satisfaction of baking from scratch, the end result will be equally monstrously delightful. If you’re short on time, even store-bought frosting is perfectly acceptable – it’s all about getting to the fun part: decorating!
The process is wonderfully straightforward: bake your chosen cookies, prepare your colorful frosting, pipe on a vibrant mouth, add some wild “hair,” and finally, place the eyes. Voila! You’ll have a plate full of unique and quirky monsters ready to devour. Don’t feel confined to traditional Halloween colors; embrace a rainbow of hues to make your monsters truly stand out. For the eyes, the possibilities are endless! You can use classic googly candy eyes by Wilton, or get creative with M&M’s, Reese’s Pieces, or even mini chocolate chips. Let your imagination run wild – there’s no wrong way to make a monster!

A Family-Friendly Decorating Adventure
Decorating these cookies is an activity that truly brings families together. My 7-year-old and I had an absolute blast picking out three vibrant colors for our monster brigade. I divided the frosting into three piping bags, each fitted with a different tip to allow for varied textures and designs. Then, we simply let our creativity flow. There’s no pressure to achieve perfection; in fact, the more whimsical and mismatched your monsters are, the better! My son kept asking if he could mix up the eyes – one yellow M&M with one googly eye, for example. My response? “Why not?” After all, they’re monsters, and monsters thrive on uniqueness and a touch of delightful chaos. This hands-on approach makes the cookies even more special and creates lasting memories.
The beauty of monster cookies is that every single one can be different. Encourage kids (and adults!) to experiment with swirls, zigzags, and dollops for the “hair” and mouths. Think about different monster personalities – some might be grumpy with a downturned mouth, others mischievous with a cheeky grin. This encourages artistic expression and ensures that no two cookies are ever exactly alike, adding to the charm of your Halloween spread. This is a treat that’s not just about the taste, but about the joy of creation and the shared laughter in the kitchen.

Ingredients
- 1 batch Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, (recipe Here)
- 2 cups frosting, (recipe Here or store-bought)
- Candy for eyes (e.g., Wilton googly eyes, M&M’s, Reese’s Pieces), Food coloring (various colors)
Instructions
-
Prepare your cookies according to your chosen method (from scratch, frozen dough, or store-bought). Bake them thoroughly and then allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before proceeding to decoration. This prevents the frosting from melting.
-
Divide your frosting into separate bowls, one for each color you plan to use for your monsters. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl and mix until you achieve your desired vibrant shades. Transfer the colored frosting into piping bags fitted with your preferred tips (round, star, grass tips work great for monster hair) or simply use resealable plastic bags with a small corner snipped off.
-
Carefully match up your cooled cookies by similar size to create pairs for your sandwich cookies. Take one cookie and frost the entire bottom surface, or just a generous dollop in the center. Place a second cookie on top to create the “sandwich.” Now, using a contrasting or complementary color, pipe the “hair” onto the top cookie, focusing on the upper half to create a furry monster look. Finally, gently press two candy eyes onto the frosted face. Feel free to mix and match eye types for extra character! Allow the frosting to set for at least 30 minutes before serving or stacking to prevent smudging.
