Crispy Air Fryer Egg Rolls: Healthier Homemade Takeout in Minutes!

Get ready to enjoy incredibly delicious, homemade Chinese-style egg rolls that are crispy, flavorful, and significantly healthier when made in your air fryer. Say goodbye to deep-frying guilt and hello to an easy, satisfying meal or appetizer!

One of the absolute highlights of ordering Chinese takeout is undoubtedly those irresistible egg rolls. That perfectly crispy, golden-brown shell giving way to a warm, savory, and richly flavored filling is pure bliss. However, that deliciousness often comes with a side of guilt, knowing they’re traditionally deep-fried in excessive oil. But what if you could capture all that amazing flavor and crispiness without the added calories and fat? We have excellent news for you!

With an air fryer, you can now enjoy homemade egg rolls that are not only super easy to prepare but also significantly better for you. You’ll only need to brush a minimal amount of oil on them before cooking, resulting in a perfectly crispy exterior without the deep-fried grease. This small amount of oil is barely worth a second thought, allowing you to indulge in this classic Chinese appetizer completely guilt-free.

Why Make Egg Rolls in an Air Fryer?

The air fryer has revolutionized the way we approach many traditionally fried foods, and egg rolls are no exception. Here’s why it’s the superior method for this beloved dish:

  • Healthier Alternative: By using significantly less oil, air frying drastically reduces the fat and calorie content compared to deep-frying. You get the same satisfying crunch without the greasy aftermath.
  • Incredible Crispiness: The circulating hot air in an air fryer ensures an evenly cooked, golden, and exceptionally crispy wrapper, mimicking the texture of deep-fried versions.
  • Easy Cleanup: No splattering oil, no big pot of hot oil to dispose of. Air frying keeps your kitchen cleaner and tidier.
  • Quick Cooking Time: Egg rolls cook relatively fast in an air fryer, making them a perfect last-minute appetizer or a quick addition to your meal.
  • Less Guilt, More Enjoyment: Knowing you’re enjoying a healthier version allows you to savor every bite without any of the usual dietary guilt.

What’s In Air Fryer Egg Rolls: The Perfect Filling

The magic of a great egg roll lies in its flavorful filling. Our recipe combines classic ingredients to create a savory, aromatic mixture that complements the crispy wrapper perfectly. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll need:

  • Cabbage: This is the cornerstone of any traditional egg roll filling. For ultimate convenience and speed, we recommend using a bagged coleslaw mix. Not only is it pre-shredded, saving you a lot of chopping time, but a standard bag often contains the perfect amount needed for this recipe. It wilts down beautifully and adds a subtle sweetness and texture.
  • Ground Pork: Our protein of choice provides a rich, savory base. However, don’t hesitate to customize! Ground turkey or ground chicken are excellent alternatives if you prefer a leaner option or are catering to different dietary preferences. The key is to brown it thoroughly to develop deep flavors.
  • Green Onions: These add a mild oniony bite and a pop of fresh, vibrant color to the filling.
  • Fresh Ginger: Grated or minced fresh ginger is crucial for that authentic, warm, and slightly spicy Asian flavor profile. Don’t skip this for the best results!
  • Garlic: A classic aromatic, minced garlic infuses the pork and vegetables with its pungent, savory notes.
  • Soy Sauce: Provides the essential umami and salty foundation for the filling. Use a low-sodium version if you’re watching your salt intake.
  • Sesame Oil: A drizzle of toasted sesame oil adds a distinctive nutty aroma and flavor that is characteristic of many Asian dishes. A little goes a long way!
  • Rice Vinegar: This offers a bright, tangy counterpoint to the savory ingredients, balancing the overall flavor of the filling.
  • Salt: Essential for seasoning and bringing out the best in all the ingredients. Adjust to taste.
  • Sugar: A touch of sugar helps to balance the saltiness and acidity, adding a hint of sweetness that enhances the complexity of the filling.
  • Vegetable Oil: Just a small amount is needed, primarily for brushing on the egg roll wrappers before air frying to achieve that desired crispiness.
  • Egg Roll Wrappers: The canvas for your delicious creation! Look for these in the refrigerated section of your grocery store, usually near other Asian ingredients or produce.

How To Make Air Fryer Egg Rolls: A Step-by-Step Guide

Making these crispy air fryer egg rolls is a straightforward process that yields incredibly rewarding results. Follow these simple steps for perfect homemade egg rolls every time:

  1. Cook the Ground Pork: Start by browning your ground pork in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Break it up with a spoon as it cooks until it’s fully done and no pink remains. It’s crucial to drain away any excess fat from the pan at this stage to prevent your filling from becoming greasy.
  2. Infuse with Aromatics: Once the pork is cooked and drained, stir in the minced garlic and grated fresh ginger. Cook for just about one minute, or until these aromatics become wonderfully fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
  3. Create the Flavorful Sauce: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, salt, sugar, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. This concoction forms the backbone of your egg roll’s signature taste.
  4. Combine and Coat: Pour the prepared sauce mixture into the skillet with the cooked pork, garlic, and ginger. Continue to cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly to ensure the pork is thoroughly coated and the flavors meld together beautifully.
  5. Mix the Filling: Remove the pork mixture from the heat and transfer it to a large mixing bowl. Add the green onions and the coleslaw mix. Toss everything together until all ingredients are well blended and evenly distributed. The warmth from the pork will slightly soften the cabbage.
  6. Fill and Roll: Now for the fun part! Take an egg roll wrapper and place it on your clean counter surface. Spoon about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of the filling mixture into the center of the wrapper. Don’t overfill, or they’ll be difficult to seal and prone to bursting during cooking. Follow our detailed wrapping instructions below for best results.
  7. Prepare for Air Frying: Once your egg rolls are wrapped, lightly brush them on all sides with a little vegetable oil. This small amount of oil is key to achieving that desirable golden and crispy exterior in the air fryer.
  8. Air Fry to Perfection: Arrange the brushed egg rolls in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Work in batches if necessary; overcrowding can lead to uneven cooking and less crispiness. Cook at 390°F (199°C) for 6 minutes. Then, carefully flip them over and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes, or until they are beautifully golden brown and crispy on all sides. Cooking times can vary slightly depending on your air fryer model, so keep an eye on them.
  9. Serve and Enjoy: Remove the hot, crispy egg rolls from the air fryer and serve them immediately with your favorite dipping sauce!

How To Wrap Egg Rolls Like A Pro

Properly wrapping egg rolls is crucial for keeping the filling secure and achieving that perfect shape and crispiness. It might seem tricky at first, but with a little practice, you’ll be a master!

A close-up shot of an egg roll wrapper being filled with the pork and cabbage mixture.

1. **Position Your Wrapper:** Begin by placing a single egg roll wrapper on your counter or work surface. The trick is to position it diagonally, so a corner or “point” is facing directly towards you, forming a diamond shape.

2. **Add the Filling:** Carefully spoon about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of your prepared filling mixture into the center of the wrapper. Ensure the filling is compacted into a log shape, slightly below the center, and not too close to the edges. A common mistake is overfilling, which makes rolling difficult and can cause the egg roll to burst during cooking. Err on the side of slightly less filling if you’re unsure.

3. **Moisten the Edges:** Dip your finger in a small bowl of water and run it lightly around all four edges of the egg roll wrapper. This creates a sticky seal, essential for keeping your egg roll intact. Don’t skip this step!

4. **First Fold (Bottom Corner):** Take the point of the wrapper closest to you and fold it up and over the filling, tucking it in snugly. Gently press down to ensure it’s tight against the filling.

5. **Second Fold (Side Corners):** Now, fold the left and right corners (the side points of the diamond) inwards towards the center. You’re essentially creating an envelope shape. Gently press these folds down, ensuring they stick to the moistened edges and secure the filling from the sides.

The final step of rolling up an egg roll wrapper tightly to complete the wrap.

6. **Final Roll:** Starting from the bottom (where you made the first fold), begin to roll the entire egg roll upwards, away from you. Roll it as tightly as possible without tearing the wrapper. Continue rolling until you reach the last point of the wrapper at the top. The moist top edge should seal firmly, creating a neat, compact egg roll. Set the finished egg roll aside and continue with the remaining wrappers and filling.

Can You Make Egg Rolls Ahead Of Time? Absolutely!

These air fryer egg rolls are incredibly versatile and lend themselves beautifully to meal prepping. Making them ahead of time offers fantastic flexibility, whether you’re preparing for a party, a busy week, or simply want to have a delicious snack ready to go.

You have a couple of convenient options for preparing them in advance:

  • Refrigeration (Short-Term): If you plan to cook your egg rolls within 24 hours, you can prepare them, roll them up, and then store them uncooked in the refrigerator. To prevent them from drying out, arrange them in a single layer (if possible) or stack them with parchment paper in between. Cover them with a damp paper towel first, then seal them tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil to keep air out. This method ensures they remain fresh and pliable until you’re ready to air fry.
  • Freezing (Long-Term): This is arguably the best option for ultimate convenience and meal planning. You can double or even triple the recipe, do all the rolling in one session, and have a freezer full of ready-to-cook egg rolls. This means you’ll have delicious appetizers for unexpected guests, a quick lunch on a busy day, or a healthier crispy snack whenever a craving strikes.

Can You Freeze Egg Rolls? Yes, Cooked or Uncooked!

Freezing egg rolls is a fantastic way to ensure you always have a quick and easy meal or snack on hand. The good news is you can freeze them both cooked and uncooked, depending on your preference and how you plan to use them.

Freezing Uncooked Egg Rolls:

This is my preferred method as it allows you to cook them fresh from frozen, resulting in the crispiest texture. After wrapping your egg rolls, follow these steps:

  1. Flash Freeze: Place the uncooked egg rolls in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Ensure they are not touching each other.
  2. Freeze Solid: Place the baking sheet in the freezer for 1-2 hours, or until the egg rolls are completely frozen solid. This prevents them from sticking together when stored in a bag.
  3. Transfer to Storage: Once frozen, transfer the individual egg rolls to a freezer-safe plastic bag or an airtight container. Label with the date. They will keep well for up to 2-3 months.
  4. To Cook From Frozen: When you’re ready to enjoy them, there’s no need to thaw! Simply brush them with oil as usual and place them directly into your preheated air fryer. You’ll likely need to add 1-2 minutes to the initial cooking time (so about 7-8 minutes per side), but always check for golden crispiness and internal temperature.

Freezing Cooked Egg Rolls:

If you have leftover cooked egg rolls or prefer to have them fully prepped, you can freeze them after cooking:

  1. Cool Completely: Allow the cooked egg rolls to cool down to room temperature. This is important to prevent ice crystals from forming.
  2. Flash Freeze: Place the cooled, cooked egg rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet in a single layer. Freeze for 1-2 hours until solid.
  3. Transfer to Storage: Transfer the frozen cooked egg rolls to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container, labeled with the date. They will also last for 2-3 months.
  4. To Reheat From Frozen: Reheat these in your air fryer at about 350°F (175°C) for approximately 5-7 minutes, or until they are heated through and the wrapper is crisp again. Keep a close eye on them, as air fryer models vary, and you don’t want them to burn. They may not be quite as crispy as freshly cooked ones, but they’ll still be delicious!

Perfect Dipping Sauces for Your Egg Rolls

While these air fryer egg rolls are delicious on their own, a great dipping sauce elevates the experience! Here are a few popular options:

  • Sweet and Sour Sauce: A classic for a reason, its tangy sweetness perfectly complements savory egg rolls.
  • Sweet Chili Sauce: Offers a delightful balance of sweet with a mild kick.
  • Duck Sauce (Plum Sauce): Fruity and sweet, it’s a staple for Chinese appetizers.
  • Soy Ginger Dipping Sauce: A simple mix of soy sauce, rice vinegar, a touch of sugar, grated ginger, and a dash of sesame oil.
  • Spicy Peanut Sauce: For those who love a rich, creamy, and slightly spicy dip.

Tips and Variations for Your Homemade Egg Rolls

To ensure your air fryer egg rolls are always a success and to inspire some culinary creativity, here are some helpful tips and delightful variations:

  • Don’t Overcrowd the Air Fryer: For the crispiest results, always cook egg rolls in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Air needs to circulate freely around each one. If you stack them, they will steam rather than crisp.
  • Adjust Cooking Times: Every air fryer is slightly different. The cooking times provided are a good starting point, but always monitor your egg rolls. Some models may cook faster or slower, so adjust as needed until they are golden brown and perfectly crispy.
  • Brush Evenly with Oil: The small amount of oil is key for browning. Use a pastry brush to ensure an even, light coating on all sides of the wrapper.
  • Experiment with Protein: As mentioned, ground turkey or chicken can easily replace ground pork. You could even try finely chopped shrimp or a mix of proteins for a different flavor profile.
  • Add More Veggies: Feel free to customize the vegetable mix! Finely diced mushrooms, shredded carrots (beyond what’s in coleslaw mix), water chestnuts for crunch, or bamboo shoots can all be excellent additions. Just ensure they are finely chopped and cooked down if necessary to avoid excess moisture.
  • Spice It Up: For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the pork mixture, or serve with a spicier dipping sauce.
  • Make Them Vegetarian/Vegan: Skip the meat and increase the amount of cabbage and other finely chopped vegetables. You can also add crumbled firm tofu or plant-based ground meat alternatives. Ensure your egg roll wrappers are vegan-friendly (most are, but always check the label).
  • Cheese Egg Rolls: For a completely different twist, try these Meatball Sub Egg Rolls which feature cheese! Or simply add a small amount of shredded cheese to your regular filling for a cheesy surprise.

These egg rolls in the air fryer are truly easy to master and offer endless possibilities for customization. Whether you stick to the classic recipe or get creative with your fillings, they are such a fun and satisfying addition to any appetizer spread or a homemade takeout night. In my house, the next request is often for our favorite Vietnamese Egg Rolls, also made perfectly crispy in the air fryer!
