Muddy Buddies, affectionately known as Puppy Chow to many, have long been a staple in snack rotations across America. The name varies, with Crispix cereal originally branding it as Puppy Chow, while Chex cereal later popularized the “Muddy Buddies” moniker. Regardless of what you call it, this confectionary delight has stood the test of time, cherished for its simplicity and satisfying taste. Our Halloween version elevates this classic by incorporating iconic fall colors and, naturally, plenty of candy – because what’s Halloween without an abundance of sweet treats?

Gather Your Ingredients: Essential Supplies for Spooky Snacks
Before you dive in, make sure you have all these key ingredients on hand. For the complete, detailed recipe card with exact measurements, simply scroll to the bottom of this post!
- Chex Cereal – For the best results, I highly recommend using Rice Chex or Corn Chex. Their light, airy texture and classic square shape are perfect for coating and give the muddy buddies that signature crunch.
 - Peanut Butter – Creamy peanut butter is essential for a smooth, consistent coating. It melts beautifully with the chocolate and butter, ensuring every piece of cereal is covered in that irresistible flavor.
 - Chocolate Chips – Semi-sweet chocolate chips are my go-to, providing a rich chocolate flavor that balances the sweetness. You can experiment with milk chocolate for a sweeter profile or dark chocolate for a more intense cocoa hit.
 - Butter – A touch of butter helps create a silky-smooth chocolate-peanut butter mixture, making it easier to coat the cereal and contributing to the overall richness of the treat. Cut it into cubes for faster melting.
 - Vanilla Extract – A splash of vanilla extract enhances all the sweet flavors, adding a warm, aromatic depth to the chocolate and peanut butter base. Don’t skip this!
 - Powdered Sugar – This is the magic ingredient that gives muddy buddies their iconic “muddy” or “snowy” appearance. It creates a delightful powdery coating that clings to the chocolate-covered cereal.
 - Reese’s Pieces – These vibrant orange, yellow, and brown candies are perfect for a Halloween theme, adding a burst of color and an extra peanut butter flavor punch.
 - Mini Peanut Butter Cups – Who can resist mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups? They bring another layer of chocolate and peanut butter goodness, along with a delightful chewiness.
 - Candy Eyes – These are the secret to truly spooktacular Halloween Muddy Buddies! They instantly transform your snack into a fun, goofy, or slightly eerie creation, perfect for the holiday.

You’ll notice that my recipe doesn’t strictly follow the proportions often found on cereal boxes. I believe in amping up the chocolate and peanut butter! This ensures a more generous, flavorful coating and creates those wonderfully irresistible clumps that everyone loves. Crafting Your Creepy-Crawly Confection: A Step-by-Step Guide
Making these Halloween Muddy Buddies is a breeze, perfect for even beginner cooks or when you want a fun kitchen activity with kids. Just follow these simple steps:
- Melt the Chocolate Mixture: In a large, microwave-safe bowl, combine your chocolate chips, creamy peanut butter, and butter cubes. Microwave the mixture for 1 minute to start the melting process. After the first minute, stir everything thoroughly. Continue heating in short 20-second intervals, stirring well after each, until the mixture is completely smooth and melted. Be careful not to overheat! Once melted, stir in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated. This adds a lovely aromatic finish.
 - Coat the Cereal: Add the Chex cereal directly into the large bowl with your melted chocolate and peanut butter mixture. Using a rubber spatula or a large spoon, gently fold and stir the cereal until every single piece is thoroughly coated. Work quickly but carefully to avoid crushing the delicate cereal squares. You want a uniform coating of the rich chocolate goodness!
 - Toss with Powdered Sugar: Divide your chocolate-coated cereal mixture into two equal halves. Place one half into a large, gallon-sized plastic bag (a sturdy freezer bag works best). Add half of the powdered sugar to the bag. Seal the bag tightly, ensuring there’s some air trapped inside to allow for proper shaking. Gently yet vigorously toss and shake the bag until all the cereal pieces are beautifully coated in powdered sugar. The sugar will cling to the chocolate, creating that signature “muddy” appearance. Pour the coated cereal onto a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper to prevent sticking. Repeat this process with the remaining cereal mixture and powdered sugar.
 - Set and Finish: Once all the muddy buddies are coated, spread them out evenly on the baking sheets. Allow the cereal mixture to set up for at least one hour at room temperature. This crucial step lets the chocolate harden, preventing the pieces from sticking together and ensuring that perfect crispy, powdery texture. Once set, transfer the muddy buddies back to a large bowl or serving platter. Now, it’s time for the festive additions! Add in your chosen candies (Reese’s Pieces, mini peanut butter cups, candy eyes, etc.) and gently toss everything together to distribute them evenly.

Transform Your Treat: Creative Candy Mix-Ins for Halloween
The beauty of Halloween Muddy Buddies lies in their versatility and the fun you can have customizing them! While I love to stick to a classic fall/Halloween color palette of orange, brown, and yellow, feel free to let your imagination run wild with your favorite candies. Here are some fantastic options to get you started:
- Reese’s Pieces: These are my top choice! Their distinct orange, yellow, and brown hues perfectly complement the fall and Halloween theme, and their peanut butter flavor blends seamlessly with the muddy buddies.
 - Candy Eyes: These edible eyes are an absolute game-changer for Halloween. They instantly add a whimsical, spooky, or silly touch to your snack, making each piece look like a little monster. You can easily find Wilton Candy Eyes on Amazon, or at craft stores like Hobby Lobby and Michael’s, as well as major retailers like Walmart and most grocery stores in the baking or cake decorating aisle.
 - Candy Corn: A quintessential Halloween candy! While some people love it and some don’t, its iconic colors and shape are undeniably festive.
 - Harvest Candy Pumpkins: Similar to candy corn in flavor and texture, these small, chewy pumpkins add another classic Halloween visual to your mix.
 - Mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups: These bite-sized delights offer a more substantial chew and an extra burst of rich chocolate and peanut butter. Chop them roughly for smaller pieces if desired.
 - Fall M&M’s: Look for seasonal M&M’s that come in autumnal colors like orange, yellow, and brown. They add a satisfying crunch and a pop of color.

Beyond these, consider adding chopped pretzels for a salty crunch, festive Halloween sprinkles for extra sparkle, or even small gummy worms for a truly creepy-crawly effect. The goal is to create a treat that’s as exciting to look at as it is to eat!

Keeping Your Spooky Snacks Fresh: Storage Tips
To ensure your Halloween Muddy Buddies stay delicious for as long as possible, proper storage is key. Here are some tips:
Store your muddy buddies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days. While they will remain tasty, they might start to lose some of their signature crunch after the first couple of days due to moisture in the air. For a slightly extended shelf life and to help maintain crispiness, you can store them in the refrigerator for up to about 5 days. If refrigerating, I find they are best enjoyed if allowed to come to room temperature for about 15-20 minutes before serving, as this can enhance their flavor and texture.
Many people also enjoy freezing their muddy buddies! If you choose to freeze them, place them in a freezer-safe, airtight container or bag. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 2-3 months. Be aware that the texture may change slightly after freezing and thawing, often becoming a bit chewier. They are still absolutely delicious, however, and some even enjoy them straight from the freezer! If you’re concerned about having too many leftovers, remember that you can very easily cut this recipe in half to make a smaller batch, ensuring every piece is enjoyed at its freshest.
