This extraordinary trip to Costa Rica was a celebration of love and family, marking my husband’s parents’ 45th wedding anniversary. Instead of a traditional party, they envisioned a memorable family getaway, bringing together their children and grandchildren for an adventure of a lifetime. The unanimous choice for our destination was the biodiverse and captivating country of Costa Rica, renowned for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and thrilling eco-tourism opportunities. Our family, a diverse group ranging from energetic 5-year-olds to seasoned 68-year-olds, eagerly embarked on this grand adventure together.

We chose to base ourselves for one unforgettable week in the captivating Manuel Antonio area, where we rented a spacious house that served as our perfect hub for exploration. This region, famous for its incredible natural beauty and abundant wildlife, offered the ideal blend of relaxation and adventure. Each day was meticulously planned, brimming with diverse excursions that showcased the incredible spirit of “Pura Vida” and the natural wonders of the region. From navigating the lush trails of Rain Maker National Park to soaring through the canopy on a zip-line, from the challenge and excitement of deep-sea fishing to a multi-faceted adventure tour, and, of course, immersing ourselves in the iconic Manuel Antonio National Park, every moment was packed with discovery and delight. It was, without a doubt, a fun-filled, incredibly adventurous, and truly amazing family journey that exceeded all expectations.

Discovering Rain Maker National Park: A Primary Rainforest Immersion

Our first major excursion led us deep into the heart of Rain Maker National Park, a pristine primary rainforest offering an authentic glimpse into Costa Rica’s untouched natural beauty. Accompanied by an incredibly knowledgeable local guide, we embarked on a fascinating tour, traversing well-maintained trails and experiencing the jungle’s vibrant ecosystem firsthand. The kids, in particular, were enthralled by the numerous hanging bridges, which offered thrilling perspectives high above the forest floor. These bridges swayed gently, adding an extra layer of excitement to our trek. A highlight for the younger adventurers was a refreshing swim in a secluded natural pool nestled at the base of a charming small waterfall, a perfect respite amidst the tropical humidity. The sounds of the jungle, from exotic bird calls to the rustling leaves, enveloped us throughout the hike. To conclude our immersive experience, we were treated to a delicious and authentic Costa Rican lunch, consisting of flavorful rice, hearty beans, a fresh small salad, and tender grilled chicken, providing a true taste of local cuisine.

Zip-lining has always been on my personal adventure bucket list, and I was incredibly excited for this particular day. While I often seek out adventurous activities, it’s not always easy to get the whole family on board. However, on this occasion, all nine of us enthusiastically participated, and it proved to be a resounding success for everyone, from our youngest, aged 5, to the eldest, 68! My 9-year-old, initially quite nervous about the height and speed, quickly overcame his apprehension and absolutely loved it, even begging to go again another day. We chose El Santuario Canopy Adventures, and their professionalism and attention to safety were truly exceptional. The course boasted an impressive 11 different lines, each offering unique views and varying lengths, making for a truly dynamic experience. Between lines, short, scenic hikes through the lush forest allowed us to appreciate our surroundings from a different perspective. The guides were outstanding – incredibly friendly, highly skilled, and ensured that everyone felt completely safe and confident throughout the entire thrilling journey. The adventure culminated in another fantastic meal, which was undoubtedly one of the best Costa Rican lunches we enjoyed during our entire trip, a perfect end to an exhilarating morning.

Deep-Sea Fishing: A Thrilling Ocean Adventure

While not everyone in our large group shared an equal passion for fishing, my husband, my 9-year-old son, my brother-in-law, and I decided to embark on a deep-sea fishing expedition. We rented a boat for the day, complete with an experienced local guide, and set out under a gorgeous, clear sky – a truly perfect day for being out on the water. My brother-in-law is an avid fisherman; in fact, he had gone out with the same guide earlier in the week and had an incredible haul of four large fish, bringing two home for us to enjoy over several delicious meals. For the rest of us, the day was more about the experience and the joy of being on the ocean. Despite not being seasoned anglers, the three of us managed to catch a fish each, adding to the day’s excitement. I was particularly thrilled to reel in the biggest prize of the day: a magnificent Rooster Fish! These distinctive fish are highly sought after by sport fishermen visiting Costa Rica. After what felt like an intense 20-minute battle of strength and endurance, I successfully reeled it in, a truly rewarding and unforgettable moment!

Manuel Antonio National Park: Wildlife, Guides, and Secluded Shores

Manuel Antonio National Park is world-renowned for its pristine, picturesque beaches and an astonishing abundance of diverse wildlife. To truly appreciate its wonders, the entire family embarked on a guided tour of the park, a decision we quickly realized was indispensable. Our incredibly sharp-eyed guide pointed out creatures we would have undoubtedly walked right past, from playful monkeys swinging through the trees (including agile squirrel monkeys and charismatic white-faced capuchins) to a vibrant array of exotic birds, camouflaged lizards, fascinating spiders, and the incredibly slow-moving sloths that are so characteristic of the region. A knowledgeable guide is absolutely essential for spotting the incredible biodiversity hidden within the dense forest. After an awe-inspiring walk through the lush forest trails, we emerged onto one of the park’s iconic beaches. The kids immediately reveled in the warm, clear waters, while my husband and I decided to explore further along the shore. Just a short, five-foot path through a small patch of forest led us to an almost completely deserted, utterly gorgeous beach – a truly hidden gem. We concluded our park adventure at a charming local restaurant in town, where we enjoyed refreshing snacks and delicious smoothies made from an exotic local fruit whose name, unfortunately, escapes me. Our thoughtful guide even treated the kids to ice cream cones, making for a perfect end to a perfect day.

My husband and I had wisely planned for a special day where we could enjoy an adventure just the two of us, while the grandparents graciously volunteered to entertain our son and the other children back at the house. They spent the day relaxing by the pool, ensuring everyone had a fantastic time. For our couples’ adventure, I convinced my husband to join me on an exhilarating 10-in-1 adventure tour – an experience designed for true thrill-seekers! Our sister and brother-in-law also decided to join the fun, making it an even more memorable day. This tour was a non-stop adrenaline rush, featuring a variety of exciting activities. We rappelled down a cascading waterfall, soared through the air on more zip-lines, experienced the dizzying “Spiderman swing,” and felt the exhilarating rush of a free-fall drop. A particularly unforgettable moment involved swinging upside down over a picturesque ravine with a river flowing beneath us, an experience that perfectly captured the spirit of pure adventure. This day was absolutely my kind of trip – packed with excitement, breathtaking views, and unforgettable thrills!

Renting a spacious house and spending an entire week together in Costa Rica proved to be an absolutely amazing and ideal family vacation. It provided us with the perfect blend of activity and relaxation, allowing us to truly immerse ourselves in the beauty of the Manuel Antonio area while enjoying the comforts of a private home. Most days, we were back at the house by early afternoon, typically around 2:00 PM. This schedule allowed the kids ample time to splash and play in the refreshing pool, while the adults could unwind, share stories of the day’s adventures, or simply relax with a good book. One of the best decisions we made was to take advantage of the private chef option, which many rental properties in the region offer. Given the varied tastes of our large family, including young children, having a chef come in to prepare our dinners every night was a game-changer. The convenience was unparalleled, and surprisingly, the cost was almost comparable to dining out regularly once we factored in taxi fares (as we opted not to rent a car). Beyond the practicality, the food prepared by our chef was consistently incredible, and the ability to customize our menu each day ensured everyone’s culinary preferences were met, making every evening meal a delightful experience.
